The best new group of 2012? Quite possibly. They played in front of Paris’ rather grandiose town hall this month as part of a four day freebie called the Fnac Festival. Fortunately their delicate ditties come across well on such a big stage. Even when it’s actually quite a gruesome song about murder (“She may contain the urge to run away / So hold her down with soggy clothes and breezeblocks”). Hats off, chaps! Now, if only that arse singing in the background would shut up…

Perhaps the most mind-blowing song of 2011 in full, including THAT vertigo-inducing breakdown, where this majestic tune degenerates into its own dark alter-ego. And yes, wobblecam in full effect but the whole six minutes are well worth watching; the visual mayhem fits perfectly with the track’s controlled chaos.

Yes, for the first time ever, my game of the year is mobile. Significant? In fact, Superbrothers: Swords & Sworcery EP (photo, iPad) is more important for its form than its format. Rarely had a point-and-click adventure game been so effortlessly slick, stylish and funny. Here was an 8bit chunky pixel marvel, where medieval characters proclaimed “dude”, “most tranquil” and… well, talked to us like a mate. One of many ways its developers drew us into an experience where we could just as well zen out walking in dreams as we could have incredible heart-pounding moments in incredible boss fights. Not to mention Jim Guthrie’s music, one of the best game scores ever. Sheer genius, and thrillingly promising for 2012.

Meanwhile, El Shaddai was the year’s most visually exuberant title; Skylanders and Rayman were two titles brimming with genuine childish delight and inventiveness; Portal 2 was, after S:S&S EP, 2012’s funniest title, thanks largely to Stephen Merchant’s voice acting, but a game ultimately too hard to finish; Deus Ex 3, which finely balanced stealth, story and silliness to keep us fully hooked until the end; Uncharted 3, which delivered its epic rollercoaster adventure once again, yet failed to make its plot or characters as gripping as last time; Skyrim, where dragon-slaying gave us a greater sense of power and purpose than in Oblivion, in a most-epic environment indeed; and Batman 2, where the joy of gliding between skyscrapers won over a silly “villain megamix” story.

LA Noire comes second only because of its opaque interrogation system (what difference did getting all the questions right change, in fact?) and very strange ending. Which didn’t stop us being blown away by the most amazing facial animation ever, period. Never had video game characters been capable of conveying such a wide range of emotions; and never had we identified so well with said characters. I still get a kick out of seeing Cole Phelps in The Good Wife, or the forensics doctor in American Horror Story. How often can you say that of a video game? Tragically, LA Noire’s Australian developer has gone bankrupt since: but we can always pray for a sequel.

In a nutshell: what a frikkin’ good year for gaming!

Back again with my fave tunes of June-August 2011.

Highlights include neo-shoegazers Washed Out’s tribute to Nietszche (“Amor Fati” means “love your fate”, the key to being an übermensch, apparently); the mind-blowingly brilliant Austra; Arctic Monkeys’ tribute to New Order; and a slightly below form Junior Boys but we’ll let them off this time.

Also a genuflection and tip of the hat to Domino, all of the aforementioned artists being on the label in some shape or form. Pure genius.

As is Danger Mouse’s latest venture, “Rome”: like a western meets Moon Safari.

Not forgetting oldies but goodies: “Surfa Rosa” has turned out to be an amazing jogging anthem; and the other day my 4 year-old told me “Autobahn” was “really beautiful.” Bless!

SXSW 2011 Concerts filmed - and sung - by yours truly

What can I say. It was huge. All this is just 24h, just 5 of the 400 concerts on at SXSW last March. Lucky yours truly got to go for work but no, these concerts weren’t part of my assignment. More like part of the biggest city-wide, block-spanning, eardrum-challenging and foot-soring music festival I’ve ever experienced. Yes the conferences were great too; and very much like the concerts, there’s so much on you don’t know where to start… or stop. Or how to find the good stuff (I mean look at the schedule for one of the big music days!) Yes, it all gets a bit much sometimes but you come away with a resounding “WOW” feeling.

Duran Duran (Duran Duran!) and James Blake night were a great starter (unlike the excessively noisy Suuns just before), but the next day, the odd proper meeting aside, was a case of hopping from concert to concert checking out new bands all over Austin. Wish I could remember all their names… but having SXSW-hardened guides made all the difference. After lunch we went off to a courtyard gig, then another in a bar, then another where my discovery of SXSW (Naked & Famous, above) were playing, then a meeting, then The Strokes with Clemence, then Violens, then phone packed in and panic set in, then I finally found same guides, who were still at it, pogoing to far-too-violent duo Middle Class Rut… until the early hours. They did this four days on the trot. I’d already had 3 days conferencing & co so was done for anyway.

In short, a proper whirlwind. Sometimes painful (TAXIS ARE HELL!) but mostly mindblowing. Oh and I got lots of work done too, honest :)

You take a series of photos and said app weaves them together… Except when you put phone back in your pocket too soon & it weaves vertically instead of horizontally. Still, beats your average skiing photo, n’est-ce pas?
